Penang Animal Welfare AKA 4PAWS is a canine shelter for stray, abandoned and injured dogs. German retiree, Barbara Jansen has a special place in her heart for the poor dogs and with her pension and savings, rescue and shelters them. We decided to make a visit.
As part of our Community Project, we brought a select handful of kids to the canine shelter. We set out with a humble donation of dog food, clothes and towels from the kids and were given a tour of the doggie sanctuary by Barbara herself.
Most of the dogs are free roaming. The cages are reserved for the sick and injured or nursing mothers. At first, the kids were intimidated by the many dogs running up to them, curiously sniffing them and some friendly ones even jumping up at them ! It was a real eye-opener for the children. The shelter is divided into four main sections and different packs roam their "domain".
We then helped to bath some of the dogs. We were glad to see the kids get their hands dirty - they grabbed the dogs and started scrubbing !
